Go7 Cup – Report

The First Go7 Cup was organised on March 9-10, 2024 in the Go club Go7.

The idea of this tournament is to award the title “Go7 Champion” to the winner each year, and engrave their name next to the precious Go7 Cup (yes, the one that looks like the Goblet of Fire).

The tournament had 27 participants from 7 different countries, and a very strong top group!

Stanislaw Frejlak 1p from Poland took the 1st place undefeated. The other top places were decided by SOS: Elian Grigoriu 6d took the 2nd place, but lost to Xing Yuze 5d who took the 3rd place. Yuze lost to Lothar Spiegel 5d, and Lothar lost to Thomas Pantle 4d, while Thomas lost to Elian. The other Frejlak took the 6th place after the longest bloody game of the tournament, between her and Lothar. (Virzhinia Frejlak 4d, for those who don’t know).

Oleksandr Hiliazov 3d (Ukraine) came from Poland to play this tournament – if you want to improve Go while scrolling check out his cool Instagram page @TsumegoLab.

Sara Nishi 4k, talented 9 year old girl studying Go persistently, managed her first win against a dan player. Congratulations! She won the 1st prize for U18, and was followed by unstoppable Lilly and Cherry Hu.
In total 11 out of 27 players were U18.

Quite a large part of the top group came by nighttrain/bus on Saturday morning to Vienna, and left on Sunday evening. Really brave I would say, but maybe next time consider visiting Vienna, it is quite beautiful.

A nice highlight of this tournament are the large windows through which the passerby on the busy Lerchenfelderstraße can see Go. One wouldn’t say, but it seems that it is more engaging than a cafe, shop or other shop-windows.

We hope to see you next year in the Go7!
